2018 Street Party – update

The South Highfields Street Party, which took place on Saturday 13th August 2016 in the Upper Tichborne and Welland Street area, was again organised by Anita, Julie, Maggie and Andrew and as expected was a resounding success. Even the weather was excellent.

Our surprise guest this year was Jon Ashworth, Member of Parliament for Leicester South, who said a few words to get the party off to a good start. Lucy Chaplin, one of the Stoneygate Ward councillors, was also present to give a helping hand.

As usual, it was open to everyone living in the area, and a large number of people (children and adults) attended from the local community. Two of the local residents provided free home-made cakes for everyone – it was very kind of them.

Activities included street games, arts & crafts, face painting, and a magician. Music was provided by Afro-Kubanza on the drums and our resident DJ Natty Nigel King on the decks.

Leicester Riders (BBL Champions 2015/2016) were present, with a ‘Shoot the Hoop’ demonstration and give-aways as prizes.

Leicestershire Police were again in attendance with give-aways and joined in the fun, but unfortunately Leicestershire Fire & Rescue were busy at an incident in the city centre and were unable to attend the party.

We are very grateful to Mohammed at the MKA Centre for his help in providing tables and chairs for the party, and to the volunteers from Trinity Life Church who assisted with everything.

2016 Street Party – update

2016 Street Party

The South Highfields Street Party will take place this year on Saturday 13 August, from 2pm until 5pm, at the junction of Upper Tichborne, Welland and Connaught Streets.

We have now commenced planning for the event, and are aiming for it to feature similar games and activities as last year, together with a few surprises! As usual, food will be available.

Volunteers will be required nearer the day of the event, but if you would like to offer your services now, please feel free to do so. The organising committee will be receptive to all helpful suggestions – contact Anita, Julie, Maggie or Andrew.

 

Images from our 2015 Street Party held on Saturday 22nd August

The South Highfields Street Party, which took place on Saturday 22nd August 2015 in the Upper Tichborne and Welland Street area, was a resounding success.

It was open to everyone living in the area, and we estimate that approx. 150 people (children and adults) attended from the local community.

Activities included street games, arts & crafts, face painting, dancing and a magician. Music was provided by our resident DJ, Natty Nigel King.

Information stalls were also provided by Leicestershire Police, Fire & Rescue, Midland Heart, Sure Start and MKA Centre, all of which were of great interest. The Council recycling team and Leicester Mercury were invited but did not attend.

Our local ward councillors who were present were delighted at how well the event was organised.
